Grounding Know the importance of this great system!

We must know that the system of grounding, It is one of the most fundamental parts when it comes to an electrical installation, so within this article we will know its objectives, and the importance of its use in multiple electrical jobs. So let's get started.

Grounding

What is known as a ground connection or connection, is a system that is responsible for the protection of users on an electrical network. This is an electrode, which is fixed to the ground with little resistance and is also fixed to the metal parts of the structure of a building.

It extends throughout an installation in such a way that it forms an electrical conduction path, seeking to ensure the continuity of its current and the ability to safely conduct that current.

Likewise, this concept is applied directly to a third conduit, which is connected to the earth or the ground, and this is linked to the outlets, which are commonly known as polarized outlets. On the other hand, these connections have their purposes, which are:

  • The effective protection of systems against the effects of atmospheric discharges.
  • Provide a means to be able to spread the electric current on the earth within normal or short-circuit conditions, without the need to exceed the operating limits of the equipment or to cease the continuity of services.
  • It is responsible for minimizing the interference of electrical transmission and distribution circuits with communication and control systems.

On the other hand, we have two types of protection that work according to the grounding in a basic way, which are protection against transient overvoltages (equipment protection) and differential protection against direct contacts (Personal protection) . Likewise, the effects of transient overvoltage within the installation can be avoided by means of transient overvoltage protectors known as SPD.

The quality of protection against overvoltages is closely linked to the system of grounding, since a high impedance path, can imply the equipment that has greater sensitivity to the effects of this overvoltage. Directly, in the event of a loss or non-existence of the grounding, protection against overvoltages can lose its total effectiveness.

System installation

On the other hand, it should be noted that when installing a grounding system, it is very important to plan it carefully and very completely. The first thing to consider in any system, of course, the earth itself.

The earth itself is composed of highly resistant materials, compared to any metal. Therefore, any current that must flow through the ground has a considerable voltage drop over a short distance.

Similarly, we can differentiate between two main types of ground connection: Ground connections that are made to water pipes, metal structures, buildings or other metal structures that are installed for any other purpose within the ground systems.

Connections made to ground poles, buried cables, plates and other types of electrodes specifically designed for the purposes of grounding.

Bars or tubes that are buried have proven to be fairly inexpensive grounding devices, in addition, the tubes are usually made of steel, while the most common bars are made with steel centers covered with a sheath of pure copper.
