Create your own Minecraft server

Create your own Minecraft server

Learn in this guide how to create your own server in Minecraft, if you are still interested in this question, keep reading.

In Minecraft, players have to create and destroy different types of blocks in a three-dimensional environment. The player wears an avatar that can destroy or create blocks, forming fantastic structures, creations, and works of art on various multiplayer servers in multiple game modes. Here's how to create your own server.

How do you set up the Minecraft server?

Minecraft has sold over 100 million copies worldwide. Kids and adults around the world mine, build and play Minecraft together in multiplayer worlds; Players develop social skills, improve their problem solving skills and get creative when they build together online. Minecraft has so many educational benefits that it's just amazing.

On a public Internet server, players can build more and better together than they could alone; however, you have no control over exactly who connects to the public servers, and therefore who your child interacts with online. The good news! By setting up your own server, you can know exactly who is connecting and playing in your child's worlds.

We have created some downloadable tutorials to help you create your own Minecraft server for your student. They were created using iD Game Plan, the same learning management system used by students at the camp.

First of all, it is important…

Before trying to do any of this at home, these instructions are for parents to help their children. Therefore, children MUST get parental permission and choose a time when they can supervise and help. Setting up and running an online server means anyone with your external IP address can join your server and play in your Minecraft world. Think carefully who you invite to play on your server.

Be sure to keep an eye on who you and your child invite to play on your server. The best way to keep your server safe and happy is to only invite players you know in real life. There are a lot of nice people on the internet, but if you limit your server to people you know, you won't be surprised who your kids meet.

PC setup instructions:

1. Check for the latest version of Java

Since Minecraft is a Java-based game, the first step is to make sure you have the latest version of Java installed. If you don't have one, download Java here.

Do you need help solving problems?

See the Wiki article on how to set up a Minecraft online server. NOTE: Some solutions to server problems require changing critical settings on your computer. If done incorrectly, it can damage your computer.

2.Minecraft_Server.jar

First of all, you will need the server files. You can get them for free on the Mojang website:

1. Go to the Minecraft server download page and download minecraft_server.1.11.jar.
2. Once the download is complete, copy minecraft_server.1.11.jar to a new folder on your desktop and name that folder “Minecraft Server”.
3. Double click minecraft_server.1.11.jar to launch it.

You will see several new files appear with it in the folder.

3. Minecraft Version

If Minecraft is updated to a newer version, the instructions above will still apply, but "1.11" will be replaced with the new version number.

4. Batch file to start the server

1. Right-click on the Server folder where you have placed Minecraft_Server.1.11.jar.
2. Select New > Text Document.
3. Name the new document “Execute”.
4. Inside the “Notepad” document insert the following line: 1 cmd /k java -Xms1G -Xmx1G -jar minecraft_server.1.11.jar

Important

If you are using a different version of the server, change "minecraft_server.1.11.jar" to the name of the version you are using.

Now save as a batch file – the file that Windows uses to run command line commands.

5. Click File > Save As.
6. In the Save as type field, select All Files.
7. Set the file name as “Run.bat”.

Important

Be sure to remove the .txt at the end of the file name.

5. EULA Consent

Mojang provides a license agreement that you must accept before running a Minecraft server. You will need to edit the eula.txt file to indicate your agreement.

1. Double-click the eula.txt file.

You can read the EULA here or by copying and pasting the text from the file.

2. Change the line eula=false to eula=true.

6. Start the server

You are now ready to launch your server.

Double click on Run.bat and your server will start.

A window will appear with information about your server. As long as you leave this window open, your server is running and players can connect to it.

7. Server window

Your server provides some information to help you stay on top of what's going on, even if you're not in the game.

1. You can see how much memory the server is using in the statistics panel.
2. You can check who is currently connected to the server in the player panel.
3. You can see server messages and player chats in the Log and Chat panel.
4. You can use the bottom right corner box to enter the server commands.

Server commands

Server commands allow experienced users to gain more control over their server. A list of all possible commands can be found here.

8. Adding to the server

Now it's time to join your Minecraft server.

1. Start Minecraft.
2. On the main menu, click Multiplayer.
3. Click Add Server.
4. Name your server in the Server Name field.
5. Enter “localhost” in the Server Address field.
6. Press the "Done" button.
7. Select your server and click Join Server.

You should now be able to play on your home server. Next, we will set up an Internet connection so that other players can connect to it.

9. Port Forwarding

The next step is to change your router settings so that other users can access your computer through it. This process will be different for each person, as it depends on the type of router you have.

1. Before you begin, read this page on portforward.com for basic information on port forwarding.
2. Follow this link for a list of port forwarding guides.
3. Select the make and model of your router from the list and follow the instructions provided.

Is your router not listed?

If you can't find your router listed on this site, try a few things:

    • If you can find the manufacturer but not the model: Try searching for the closest number to your model. They are usually similar processes.
    • Search the internet for the model of your router and “port forwarding”.
    • Contact your router's support team and ask how to forward ports.

10. Find an external IP address

After you have forwarded the ports, you have to find your external IP address.

1. open your browser and go to google.com
2. Enter “external ip” in the search box and press Enter or Return.
3. Google will tell you your external IP address.

Your external IP address will be IPv4 or IPv6 and will look like one of the following examples:

IPv4 address example: 12.34.456.789
Patrón de dirección IPv6: 2001:0db8:0a0b:12f0:0000:0000:0000:0001

When you find your external IP address, save this number – other people will need it to connect to your server.

11. Connect to your server

Now that you have port forwarded your connection, other players can connect using your external IP address. To get players to connect to your server, follow these steps:
1. In Minecraft, click Multiplayer.
2. Click Add Server.
3. Enter a server name.
4. Enter the server address.

This will be your external IP followed by the port number: 25565 This will look like the address in the image to the right.

If you have an IPv6 address, enclose the address in [ ] characters as follows: [2001:0db8:0a0b:12f0:0000:0000:0000:0001]:25565

5. Click Finish. Minecraft will now try to connect to the server. Once connected, select the server and click Join Server.

Invite players to join

Anyone you give your external IP address to can play on your Minecraft server. Make sure you trust who you invite to play. It is safest to invite only people you know. Ask parents before inviting new players.

12.Server.properties file

You can also configure some game settings with a file in the Server folder called Server.properties.

Open this file with any text editor and you will be able to change the properties of your Minecraft world by editing the lines in the file.

The most common properties you can change are:

    • gamemode=0: Change this value to gamemode=1 to put your server in creative mode.
    • max-players=20: Change this number to increase or decrease the number of players that can join your server simultaneously.

You can find a link to all the available options on the Minecraft Wiki.

Editing server properties

You don't need to change anything in this file for your server to work. Do not make any changes to this file unless you are sure what you are doing.

That's all you need to know about setting up your server at Minecraft.
