Windows is heir to faulty genes, the father is the legendary DOS (Disk Operating System), as a user of this popular operating system, you should know that from that first version of floppy operating system families until today, Windows maintains certain "imperfections" -so to speak- that are still present in the current versions and they probably will be forever and ever, right?
It is something strange and curious at the same time, but it turns out that if you try for example create a folder with the name "with" (without quotes), a window will pop up whose strange message will say:
the device name is invalid.
Cannot create folder named CON |
Why is this happening? Which device does it refer to?
Ok, everything has a logical explanation, "WITH" is a reserved word, its use is exclusive for an MS-DOS console command that at that time (we are talking about the DOS era) allowed the control of other devices, specifically keyboard and screen.
Thus, knowing that Windows in its first version was running in a DOS environment, that is, without a graphical interface or a mouse, in each new version of the operating system, the bug still remained, although these have nothing to do with the DOS interface.
But it is not only the word WITH the only one that does not allow creating folders or files (yes, it also affects files), there are also other reserved words that prevent creating with their names and these are:
- with (keyboard and screen).
-
PRN (list of system devices, usually a parallel port).
- AUX (auxiliary device, usually a serial port).
- CLOCK $ (real time clock system).
-
NUL (bit-bucket device).
- A: -Z: (drive letters).
- COM1 (first serial communication port).
- COM2 (second serial communication port).
- COM3 (third serial communication port).
- COM4 (fourth serial communication port).
- LPT1 (first parallel printing port).
- LPT2 (second parallel printing port).
- LPT3 (third parallel printing port).
- LPT4 (fourth parallel printing port).
- LPT5 (fifth parallel printing port).
- LPT6 (sixth parallel printing port).
- LPT7 (seventh parallel printing port).
- LPT8 (eighth parallel printing port).
- LPT9 (XNUMXth parallel printing port).
Just a moment…
However, claiming that it is "impossible" create a folder called CON, it is a myth, since it is possible, but for this we would have to use the command console (MS-DOS), with the syntax md. with.
But, it is not recommended, with Windows we do not know if it would later bring conflicts for the system. What should be noted is that the second problem would be to eliminate it since it cannot be done manually, in that case the instruction rd. with. would go into action.
Another important detail that I want to note is that neither can you save a file with the name CON (or any other reserved word), in the next screenshot we see that the same notice tells us that the word is reserved for Windows use.
Also you cannot save a file with the name CON |
And you, did you know about this Windows 'bug'? what do you think? =)
