The stat stats of any armor you find will vary quite a bit, allowing you to find yourself in the hands of an RNG god. You can also buy new armor from the many merchants in the game, so you have some control over what you wear when fighting the Reapers. Don't forget that you can also equip your squad members with new armor, so keep that in mind.
A complete change from the first game, Mass Effect 2 and 3 provide you with new armor in a completely different way. Instead of finding random loot in the world, you will now be able to find and purchase specific pieces of armor that come in a specific set.
