Subnautica: Below Zero what is a thermos for?

Players of Subnautica: Below Zero who have a thermos may be confused as to what it is for, because there is apparently no water in it.

When exploring the deep oceans of planet 4546B, players will inevitably come across strange things. Using the scanner, players can not only learn about these alien plants, animals, and objects, but can also unlock recipes to craft new items in the Fabricator. Some Subnautica: Below Zero players may have noticed that they've unlocked a thermos blueprint, but even after doing so, the object's purpose remains unclear. Simply put, the thermos can be used to store coffee and keep it warm, giving the player a portable heat source.

Given the environment of planet 4546B, players of Subnautica: Below Zero might think that there is no coffee here. Surprisingly though, players only need to craft a coffee vending machine, and then they will have an endless supply of the coveted beverage.

What is the thermos for in Subnautica: Below Zero

As mentioned, a thermos can hold hot coffee. If the player approaches a coffee vending machine, they can place an empty thermos inside. After about 17 seconds, the thermos will once again be full of coffee, which the player will be able to take with them. Drinking the coffee gives an impressive 50 heat bonus, but has the unfortunate downside of subtracting two waters. In most cases, this disadvantage is justified, especially considering that coffee can be brewed indefinitely.

Players unlock the thermos blueprint at the same time they unlock the coffee vending machine blueprint. To do this, find the coffee vending machine elsewhere and use the scanner on it. Players can find coffee vending machines to scan at the Architect's Phase Gate, Delta Station, Omega Lab, Phi Robotics Center, and Outpost Zero. Once the recipe is unlocked, they can be created with two Titans using the Habitat Builder. Lastly, players can obtain a thermos by bringing a Titan and a Glass to the Fabricator.

Since coffee can be made indefinitely without power or other obstacles, it's a good idea to have such a thermos on hand most of the time. It only takes up one slot in your inventory, and can mean the difference between life and death if the player is in a cold place with no other source of heat. As far as we know, there are no other uses for the thermos, so players shouldn't bother making one unless they plan on using it for coffee.
