As of version 0, the crater has an invisible cloak on which various ferns grow. You can't get around it with a log sled, which will just hang in the air above the invisible barrier; the only way to get the necessary materials is to lower the logs below the layer of the barrier. Use an ice ax to climb down and out of the crater.
