The Last of Us Part II how to repair damaged weapons

Learn how to repair damaged weapons in The Last of Us Part II, what challenges await you and what you need to do to complete the objective, read our guide.

The Last of Us Part II is a third-person action-adventure game with survival horror elements. The player navigates through post-apocalyptic environments such as buildings and forests to progress through the story.

On this page of our The Last of Us Part II guide, we offer information on whether any melee weapon is indestructible. We also explain what happens after a melee weapon is destroyed and how to repair damaged weapons.

indestructible weapons

Ellie has an indestructible blade. She is used in close combat (Square on the gamepad) when you don't have any "big" melee weapons. Unfortunately, the blade doesn't do much damage.

The blade is best used to kill enemies silently, but you can also use this weapon against multiple enemies, especially if you manage to attack them from behind. Unlike similar actions known in TLoU 1. The helicopter will not be destroyed if you attack the clicker. You can kill all the enemies and monsters you want with it.

Shiv Blade is a disposable weapon.

Not the case with the other playable character, Abby. She doesn't have a knife like Ally, instead she performs normal melee attacks with her fists. Like Ellie's blade, they are pretty weak attacks - you won't be able to kill enemies quickly with them. Remember to do perfect dodges between hits.

Abby can craft Shiv Blades, which work the same way as in the first part of The Last of Us. To craft Shiv Blades, you need to find a tutorial, Covert Ops. It is found inside the large outboard boat that Abby and Mel access during the On-Foot stage. Its exact location is on the Tutorials and Passive Skills page.

The Craft Shivs passive ability is the first of the new tree and costs 20 additions. You will need 1 bundle and 1 blade to make 2 of these weapons.

We also advise you to unlock the last skill, Create New Blades, from the same skill tree. You will be able to create 3 blades at a time and store up to 6 blades in your inventory (by default there are 4).

Each leaf has three main purposes. The first is to kill the clicker: you can use the blade to approach the clicker from behind, or to protect yourself from death after the monster reaches Abby. After a successful clicker attack, the blade is lost.

Since there are several clicks in some places, it is very likely that you will run out of provisions. If you can't craft any more blades at this point (due to a lack of crafting materials), you'll need to do something else: avoid the snappers or attack them with firearms or "big" melee weapons.

The second use of the Shiv Blade is to kill common opponents more quickly. When Abby manages to sneak up on a person or monster (except the biggest ones), you can grab them and decide what to do next:

    • You can start choking your opponent and break their neck (Square) – this option doesn't consume supplies, but the whole action lasts a few seconds, which means you can be spotted by another opponent.
    • You can use the Shiv Blade to quickly kill a captured enemy (Triangle) – this option will allow you to finish the job quickly and reduce the risk of being spotted, but it will cost you a Shiv Blade.

The third use of the Shiv Blade is to quickly kill opponents who have grabbed Abby. We're talking about situations where an opponent has grabbed Abby. In this case, the main advantage of using the blade is to lose as few health points as possible. The longer you fight an opponent, the more HP you can lose (unnecessarily).

Common close combat weapon

Common melee weapons such as baseball bats, axes, machetes, or hammers can be found in The Last of Us 2. All standard melee weapons have a certain strength and can be damaged. The weapon's status can be seen by looking at its icon: the number of small rectangles indicates how many attacks the weapon can make before being destroyed. In the example of the image, the machete has up to 7 points of hardness.

Try to find the items with the highest number of uses. After using all available attack stacks (only attacks that did any damage or killed your enemies count), the weapon will be irretrievably lost and destroyed. Then you will have to find another. Melee weapons can be found in the game world and by looting the bodies of some enemies.

Melee weapon repair what are the requirements?

At first you can't do anything against the gradual loss of durability of weapons and you have to understand that sooner or later those items will be destroyed. The situation can change if you find the Training Guide: Artisan. The opportunity to obtain it will appear during the "Seattle - Downtown" stage, a large semi-open mission that allows you to explore the city center.

You will have to explore the courthouse, the United States Court House. Inside the building there are many infested creatures. Once you've dealt with them, start exploring other rooms. The tutorial is in one of the rooms on the lower floor, and you can get in by breaking the glass.

Go to the passive skills tab associated with the newly found tutorial. You need to buy crafting upgrades for 20 plugins. The new item will appear in the Crafting tab.

Crafting melee upgrades allow you to restore damaged weapons and increase their damage. Unfortunately, in addition to melee weapons, you must have two crafting materials: a sheaf and a blade. You just have to look for them in the game world.

Since crafting materials aren't always easy to come by, try to repair heavily damaged weapons and those that still have multiple uses (6-7). This will allow you to enjoy each of them for as long as possible before losing them or deciding to repair them again.

Abby, a playable character in the later part of the game, can also repair weapons. In this character's case, the ability to repair and increase melee weapon damage (Melee Enhance) is immediately available and works the same as with Ellie.

Abby can also unlock the Melee Weapon Upgrades passive skill. This is one of the skills from the Artillery skill tree (see the tutorials and passive skills page for how to unlock this particular tutorial). Increases the strength of the repaired/upgraded weapon by 1. You can make 1 additional attack with it before it is destroyed.

And that's all you need to know about repairing damaged weapons in The Last of Us Part II.
